CANDLES hosts: "Voices of Syria"
As part of its Be the Change series CANDLES Holocaust Museum will host "Voices of Syria" featuring the experiences of an American humanitarian worker in South Sudan and Syria. The Be the Change series features stories of courage, resistance, and heroism in the Holocaust and other genocides, and it provides a forum to examine human rights issues in our contemporary world. This program is made possible in part by support from the Spungen Family Foundation.

Billings West High School (MT) Spring Break
The Spungen Foundation will host History teacher Rob Stanton and eight (8) students for an in-depth emersion Holocaust experience at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and CANDLES Holocaust Museum. Students will have private home meals with survivors Matthew Lassen, Magda Brown and Agnes Schwartz. The students will travel to CANDLES Holocaust Museum in Terre Haute, IN to meet with and hear Eva Kor speak. Their last private breakfast will be with Carl Wilkens and Elyseé Gasigwa, witnesses to the 1994 Rwanda Genocide and both heroes, risking their lives to hide and save tens-and-tens of Rwandans.

STAND Midwest Regional Conference, University of Chicago
With support from CANDLES Holocaust Museum, the Spungen Foundation will hosting 26 high school students from Terre Haute South STAND chapter in Indiana. In addition to the STAND Conference the students will meet privately with Syrian American students, a Holocaust survivor Magda Brown and tour the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center.

STAND is the student-led movement to end mass atrocities. Born out of the fight to stop the genocide in Darfur, Sudan, STAND is devoted to creating a sustainable student network that actively fights genocide and mass atrocities wherever they may occur.

Along with the conference organizers, Rotarian Peace Hall of Fame and Renata Laxova, the Spungen Foundation will be hosting Barbara Winton as a keynote speaker on Saturday January 16th.

Barbara Winton is the daughter of Sir Nicholas Winton, the British humanitarian who organized the rescue endangered, mostly Jewish, children from Czechoslovakia in 1939. She has written his biography, titled: If It's Not Impossible... The Life of Sir Nicholas Winton.

Hyatt Regency O’Hare Special Dinner Event

In conjunction with the World's Fair of Money August 11-15th, the Spungen Foundation will be co-sponsoring a dinner with Charlotte Krueger being flown in from Berlin Germany to address collectors and dealers from all over the world. This past May, Charlotte released her book, My grandfather, the counterfeiter. A search for traces of a Nazi's career.

Bernhard Krueger was the Nazi Commandant responsible for the counterfeiting operation ("Operation Bernhard") of the Bank of England currency at the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp just north of Berlin during WWII.

Charlotte Krueger will be attending several Chicagoland area venues August 9th - 13th.

Healing: Rwanda 20 Years with Emmanuel Habimana
Emmanuel is a filmmaker, public speaker, and activist from Kigali, Rwanda. A genocide orphan himself, in 2010 Emmanuel began co-directing Komora: To Heal, a documentary about the orphan survivors of the genocide. His 2014 tour focuses on Rwanda's achievements in healing as the world approaches the 20-year anniversary of the genocide.

Shanghai Ghetto Memory Events
In recognition of the 70th Anniversary of the "Designated Area For Stateless Refugees" (commonly known as the Shanghai Ghetto) established February 18, 1943 and in conjunction with the World's Fair of Money, the Foundation will be hosting educational events. Shanghai Ghetto survivors from all over the USA will be present to meet invited guests at the Fair and share their stories. Keynote speakers: will include:

August 15th: Steve Hochstadt author of the book, Exodus To Shanghai

August 16th: Ms. Manli Ho, daughter of Dr. Ho Feng-Shan. Dr. Ho was responsible for efforts in issuing entry visas to Shanghai that were used to facilitate the escape of Jewish refugees as China's Consul General to Vienna prior to the start of WWII.

Danny Spungen and a small group of students of the Holocaust era travelled to Bad Ischl Austria for an event honoring the last emperor of Austria (Franz Josef). The trip also included a tour of Lake Toplitz where many of the counterfeit Bank of England notes from Operation Bernhard were recovered in 1959. In addition to being guided by the diving team leader of the expedition, the group was also fortunate to meet with one of the 4 remaining Jewish survivors of Operation Bernhard. Operation Bernhard was the basis of the 2007 Oscar foreign movie of the year, The Counterfeiters.
