Nazi Party membership

Following Adolf Hitler’s assumption of power, millions of Germans enrolled in the Nazi Party, usually to obtain jobs or to assure themselves of favored treatment. The upsurge in party membership, in turn, strengthened the Nazis’ grip on the government.

Pictured Above: Karl Rometsch joined the Nazi Party on May 1, 1933. This was his second membership book, which was issued in Munich May 8, 1936, and recorded his participation until January 1943.

Pictured Below: Canceled 1½-reichsmark and 2-reichsmark stamps serve as receipts for monthly dues at the left, and 30-pfennig stamps, as receipts for extra assessments (ostensibly voluntary charitable contributions), at the right. Payments for the year 1936 are displayed on this page.
