Civil War in Spain – Republican Mail
This March 22, 1939, registered air mail envelope from St. Gilles, France, to the Republican commanding general of engineers, Army of Andalusia, arrived after Madrid fell to Franco’s Nationalist forces on March 28. It was returned to the sender as undeliverable May 14, 1939, following the Republican defeat. On the back are transit and receiving datestamps along with Nationalist military censorship and “Viva España” patriotic slogan markings.
