Annexation of Austria

Reproducing Nazi tyranny in Austria included secret police arrests of the regime’s political opponents and harsh measures against Jews.

Pictured Above: An April 28, 1938, business post card from a formerly Jewish theatrical firm in Vienna. “Arisiert” stamped below the name of the firm indicates that the business had been “Aryanized.”

Pictured Below: A May 31, 1938, cover sent from the Gestapo office at Innsbruck.

The metered postage imprint on the card is denominated in Austrian currency at the correct 9-groschen 1.5 to 1 rate during the transition. The boxed “Jahresgebühr” handstamp on the envelope indicates that the Gestapo’s postage was paid annually.
