Conquest and Annexation of Ukraine
Germany annexed the Western portion of Ukraine to the puppet state General Government of Poland, and governed the rest of the conquered territory by military occupation.
Pictured Above and Below: A 12-groszy stamp on a picture post card canceled July 1, 1943, at Lemberg, General Government (Lvov/Lviv, Ukraine). The July 3, 1942, registered letter from Ukraine to Vienna went by way of the official German post office for occupied countries.
Note the mixed franking of regular overprinted German stamps with one overprinted OSTLAND (intended for the conquered Baltic countries) and one overprinted UKRAINE. All these stamps were valid as postage there, though only the ones overprinted UKRAINE were sold at local civilian post offices.
