Undercover Address – Rua da Palma 224, Lisbon

This undercover address, discovered by this exhibitor in 2003, is unlisted in the literature. Communications were sent onward to one of the international Jewish relief agencies, whose main headquarters were in New York and London, or to one of their offices in Switzerland.

Pictured Above: This April 3, 1941, letter from the Jewish Council at Lutomiersk, Poland, a suburb of Łódź, was censored at Munich. Lisbon arrival postmarks on the back are dated April 5. The Jewish population of Lutomiersk was just 750 in 1939, so mail from this sender is virtually unknown.
