Extermination Camp Auschwitz-Birkenau – The Singer family tragedy

In this letter dated March 19, 1943, at Stockholm, Walter wrote to Arnold, “Unfortunately I have heard nothing more from you since your letter of 15. November. I verified this to you on 13. December and then wrote to you again on 19. December, 17. January and 6. February. . . . My application for your journey is still with the Swedish authorities. . . . Please let me hear from you immediately.” The letter was sent by registered mail, return receipt requested, and canceled at Stockholm on March 20, where it also acquired a green currency control label. Upon arrival at Luckau on March 27, it was forwarded to Auschwitz. On March 31 it arrived at Auschwitz, and was marked “Not accepted by the concentration camp” and “Return to Sender.” Along the way it was opened by censors at Berlin, who tested both the letter and the envelope with chemicals to check for secret writing in invisible ink.
