SUMMARY:Survivors Week #7 - June 2023
DESCRIPTION:Since 2013\, the Spungen Family Foundation has given scholarships to graduating seniors from Billings West High School in Montana to go on a trip to Poland\, including a visit to Auschwitz\, with the CANDLES Holocaust Museum (based in Terre Haute\, Indiana). \nStarting in the spring of 2017\, Billings students unable to go to Poland used their spring break time to come to Illinois for an in-depth “Survivors Week.” In the past\, the students and their teacher\, Rob Stanton\, have visited Baha’i Temple\, Illinois Holocaust Museum\, and CANDLES. \nWhen in Lincolnshire for lunches/dinners\, Holocaust and other Genocide related speakers will tell their personal stories. The Spungens’ have also hosted students from Carmel Catholic High School\, docents from the Illinois Holocaust Museum\, and other special guests. \nThis year was a little different. In 2023 we continued the Survivors Week annual tradition with another Montana school: Custer County District High School in Miles City\, Montana. Teacher John Tooke brought nine students and three fellow teachers to the Chicago area for a mini Survivors Week. They spent two days at the Spungen household\, hearing Agnes Schwartz and Ida Kersz speak\, and visiting the Illinois Holocaust Museum. \nThen they embarked on the trip to Poland with CANDLES before returning home to Montana.

SUMMARY:2023 MIF Paper Money Fair - Maastricht Netherlands (Forging Secrets\, Operation Bernhard)
DESCRIPTION:  \nContinuing a tradition of hosting unique educational presentations at numismatic events\, the Spungen Foundation invites you to celebrate the release of a new book titled Forging Secrets at the 2023 MIF Paper Money Fair in Maastricht\, the Netherlands. Keynote speaker Charlotte Krüger will tell the story of Operation Bernhard\, a secret scheme to forge British bank notes at Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. \n  \nUnder the direction of Charlotte’s grandfather Bernhard Krüger\, the operation intended to destroy the British economy\, but actually financed the German side of the war. With their lives hanging by a thread\, 140-plus Jewish prisoners produced enough fake currency to equal the face value of all reserves in the vaults of the Bank of England―an astounding 6 or 7 billion dollars in today’s money. \n  \nThis sensational true story was the subject of the Academy-Award winning film The Counterfeiters (Die Fälscher) and has now been published as a collector’s book titled Forging Secrets: Faces and Facts Inside the Nazi Operation Bernhard Scheme. A limited number of books will be available for purchase at the event via cash at a price of 125 USD / 115 euros (normal retail price is 199 USD). \n  \nPlease RSVP to Mikayla Hoppe\, mikayla@spungenfoundation.org\, by April 26. \n  \nWe are happy to accommodate additional guests. SUMMARY:Coin World Podcast - Forging Secrets\, Operation Bernhard
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday April 13\, Danny Spungen met with hosts Jeff Starck and Larry Jewett to discuss Operation Bernhard for their Coin World podcast. This was Danny’s first experience with podcasts – ever! Being a visual person\, he was the only one to show his face during the recording process. He had artifacts laid out on a table for our hosts to see\, but didn’t get a chance to show them. \n  \nFollowing a special presentation hosted by the Spungen Foundation earlier this year at the World Money Fair in Berlin about the Forging Secrets book\, Jeff Starck wrote: \n“Fantastic presentation of Charlotte Krueger\, granddaughter of Bernhard Krueger\, the man behind Operation Bernhard – the plot to wage financial war against England via counterfeiting. The highlight of the World Money Fair.”\n  \nIt was after this presentation that Jeff wanted Danny on as a guest for his podcast. They recorded the audio on April 13\, 2023 and the episode went live on Thursday April 20\, 2023. \n  \nYou can find the podcast episode number 197 on the Coin World website\, by clicking here. Or you can listen on Apple Podcasts\, Spotify\, Amazon Music\, and other platforms where podcasts are available. \n  \nDescription:\nEpisode 197: The Nazi Counterfeiting Plot \nLarry and Jeff learn from Danny Spungen about Operation Bernhard\, the Nazi counterfeiting plot during World War II\, and how that story is being shared with students today. The episode includes other forays into numismatic history. \n  \n  \n  \n\n  \nPodcast Link: https://www.coinworld.com/coinworld-podcast

SUMMARY:Important book with new information about Nazi counterfeiting plot to be unveiled at Chicago World’s Fair of Money® on August 18!
DESCRIPTION:Important book with new information about Nazi counterfeiting plot to be unveiled at Chicago World’s Fair of Money® on August 18. \nMuseum-quality book features never-before-seen accounts from historians\, descendants of Holocaust survivors\, and the granddaughter of the Nazi who ran “Operation Bernhard”. \nA new book titled Forging Secrets: Faces and Facts Inside the Nazi Operation Bernhard Scheme will become available to the public at a special event at the Hyatt Regency Chicago O’Hare on Thursday\, August 18\, 2022. Collectors\, students\, and researchers of World War II and the Holocaust will be captivated by this unique publication by the Spungen Family Foundation in association with Coin and Currency Institute. \nOperation Bernhard was a secret Nazi project during WWII that forced Jewish concentration camp prisoners to forge Bank of England notes. Initially intended to destroy the British economy\, the forged notes ended up financing the German side of the war. With their lives hanging by a thread\, 140-plus prisoners produced enough fake currency to equal the face value of all reserves in the vaults of the Bank of England—an astounding 6 or 7 billion dollars in today’s money. This sensational true story has been treated by historians\, survivors\, Hollywood\, and mainstream media\, but never have all of these elements been combined into one volume. \n“We wanted to put a face on money – to show the humanity behind this incredible story for students and future generations who take an interest in the Holocaust and World War II\,” said Danny Spungen\, trustee of the Spungen Family Foundation. “This is more than a book. This is an interactive experience in a book where students and collectors can search for and acquire an artifact\, witnesses of the Holocaust.” \nContributors to the book include Auschwitz historian and museum curator Robert Jan van Pelt; Astrid Ley and Agnes Ohm\, expert historians from the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum near Berlin; Debbie Walter\, daughter of Operation Bernhard survivor Hans Walter; and Charlotte Krüger\, granddaughter of Bernhard Krüger\, the Nazi who ran the operation. The story was popularized by The Counterfeiters\, which won an Academy Award in 2007 for best foreign film\, but it contained many inaccuracies. In an age of increasing Holocaust distortion and denial\, Forging Secrets takes on the mission of correcting the historical record. Compelling eyewitness accounts of the forgery workshop’s survivors are combined with historical analysis and new information on the counterfeit notes\, which have become a popular collector’s item. The book was edited by expert numismatist Joseph Boling\, Spungen Foundation executive director Kiel Majewski\, and foundation trustee Danny Spungen. Several other researchers and historians also contributed original content. \nThe book features over 500 images\, including never-before-published sketches of Bernhard prisoners by the artists Peter Edel and Leo Haas\, who were themselves prisoners in the forgery operation. Perhaps the most unique feature of the hardcover\, linen-wrapped book is a die-cut window in the cover. The window opens up to a museum-quality transparent polyester sleeve stitched into the book and sized precisely to hold an artifact—a counterfeit “Operation Bernhard” note produced by the prisoners of Block 19 in Sachsenhausen. Retail copies of the book will come with a replica Bernhard note depicting the signatures of three survivors of Block 19—Adolf Burger\, Jack Plapler\, and Hans Walter. Guidance on how to conserve an authentic Bernhard note is printed on the backside of the replica. \nEach copy of the short-run collectible book will be numbered 1-1000 and will retail for $199. Thanks to the generous contributions of donors and sponsors\, 200+ copies will be made available to students at an 85% discount. Available from bookstores\, coin and paper money dealers\, at trade shows\, and from internet book sellers. Copies may also be obtained from the Coin & Currency Institute\, www.coin-currency.com\, +1 800 421 1866. Free shipping in the USA. Foreign orders will be billed actual cost. \nFor more information about book launch events in the United States\, the Netherlands\, and Germany\, contact Danny Spungen at danny@spungenfoundation.org / +1 847 775 4675. \nNew information about the book is continuously being added to www.spungenfoundation.org. \n  \nSee Full Press Release Below: \nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE\nTuesday\, July 26\, 2022\nCONTACT: Kiel Majewski\nEmail: kiel@spungenfoundation.org\nCall / Text / WhatsApp: +1 812 229 2316\nHIGH-RESOLUTION IMAGES AVAILABLE PROMPTLY UPON REQUEST \n[pdf-embedder url=”https://spungenfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/PR_Forging-Secrets-book_jmedia_220805_rev5.pdf” title=”Forging Secrets Press Release”]

This year\, we had our first Survivors Week in the summer. \nA small group of just five students came to the Chicago area and participated in a shortened week of events. Speakers included survivors’ Doris Fogel\, Ida Kersz\, Judy Kolb\, Ellie Merar\, Steen Metz\, and Agnes Schwartz. Other speakers included Lewis Lee and Gary Powers Jr.
