SUMMARY:Be the Change: Stories of Personal Courage\, Resistance and Heroism
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, January 24 | 3:00-5:00 PM EST \nJoin us for a conversation with Holocaust survivor Agnes Schwartz and Milwaukee community leader Lewis Lee. The program will start with the testimonials of Agnes and Lewis\, as well as their take on current affairs. Q&A will follow.\nClick here to register via Zoom. \nWatch a livestream of this event on the CANDLES Facebook page. \nAgnes Schwartz – Agnes was born in Budapest\, Hungary. She was 10 years old when German forces occupied her town\, and her family was forced to move to a yellow star or Jewish designated building. Their housekeeper Julia\, an unmarried non-Jew\, took Agnes to safety by claiming her as her niece. Agnes became a “hidden child” living in the open but living in fear\, not knowing when her family would be reunited. \nLewis Lee – Lewis coordinates Portal operations for Shared Studios in Milwaukee\, as well as local outreach and business development in the Amani neighborhood. Lewis is the Outreach Coordinator for the Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative and runs the Meade Men Resource Home for Boys. He is a leader working on community development and restorative justice. \nKiel Majewski (moderator) – Kiel is a public historian who is passionate about helping eyewitnesses of genocide transfer their legacies to future generations. For ten years\, Kiel was the first executive director of CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center. Kiel has curated exhibits\, led tours of genocide memorials in North America\, Europe\, and Africa\, and has mentored youth and adult peace-building advocates. \nAdmission for this event is free and open to the public. \nBe The Change-A Conversation with Agnes Schwartz and Lewis Lee

SUMMARY:Auschwitz Museum Traveling Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Spungen Family Foundation has loaned 36 artifacts for a seven year period to the Auschwitz Museum Traveling Exhibit. The organizers are a team from Musealia\, a Spanish company dedicated to creating high quality travelling exhibitions for museums and cultural centers throughout the world\, first in Madrid\, then Sweden in late 2018. \nEXHIBIT EXTENSION\nWe are very pleased to announce that the Government of Madrid\, hosting partner of the exhibition in the Spanish capital through the public company Canal Isabel II\, has requested us the extension of the exhibition in its venue. This is due to the excellent figures of visitors (more than 250\,000 visitors have already been to the exhibition and it is estimated that roughly 400\,000 will do so before the planned closing on June 17th\, and\, most importantly\, the will to bring as many schools to the exhibition as possible (50\,000 of them have so far booked their free visit). \nWe have agreed with them that the exhibition will be extended until 3 February 2019\, at the current venue Centro de Exposiciones Arte Canal\, which will allow us to reach the touristic season in the summer and the schools groups from all over Spain in autumn. \n– wwww.auschwitz.net\n– info@auschwitz.net\n– Press Release\n– NY Times article
