Elgin Area School District U-46 staff professional development day on teaching the Holocaust

January 27, 2023

On Friday, January 27, 2023, over 200 high school teachers from the Elgin Area School District U-46 are attending an all-day professional development event titled, ‘Teaching the Holocaust through Stories and Artifacts.’ Illinois requires that each of its public elementary and high schools includes teaching the Holocaust in their curriculum; all of U-46’s Language Arts, social studies, and theater teachers will be in attendance at this professional development session.

Activities of the day include a table reading of the play “Thin Edge of the Wedge,” written by Phyllis Zimbler Miller, an alum of Elgin High School who will also be in attendance at the session. In addition, there will be presentations given to the teachers by the Illinois Holocaust Museum, The Ninth Candle, and the Spungen Family Foundation.

This professional development opportunity coincides with International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and was organized by Jacob VandeMoortel, U-46 Coordinator of K-12 Social Studies and World Languages, in conjunction with Phyllis Zimbler Miller.
